Volunteer Spotlight: Jan Schlotzhaer - Spreading Joy with Meals on Wheels of Loveland and Berthoud

At Meals on Wheels of Loveland and Berthoud (MOWLB), our volunteers are the heart and soul of our organization. They bring compassion, dedication, and a genuine desire to make a difference in the lives of our community’s older adult population. One shining example of this dedication is Jan Schlotzhauer, a volunteer who has been spreading joy and making a positive impact for over 7 years.

Meet 7 year volunteer, Jan Schlotzhauer

Jan’s journey with Meals on Wheels of Loveland and Berthoud began through the suggestion of her dear friend and neighbor, Judy Ryan. Judy had been a MOWLB volunteer for many years and recognized that Jan’s caring nature and love for connecting with others would be a perfect fit for our organization. As a self-proclaimed “people person” who enjoys lending a helping hand whenever she can, HJan decided to seize the opportunity and join MOWLB’s volunteer crew. Looking back on that decision, Jan expresses her gratitude, saying, “I’m so glad I did!”

first impressions of mowlb

Jan’s first impression of MOWLB was a resounding testament to the organization’s excellence. She found MOWLB to be a well-run, efficient, caring, and even fun organization. This positive initial experience set the tone for her volunteer journey, fostering her commitment to making a difference in the lives of those she serves.

embracing the cause and mission

When asked about the challenges she encounters with mOWLB’s cause and mission, Jan’s response reflects the profound impact of the organization’s work. She shares that she doesn’t find many challenges in MOWLB’s cause, as she believes it’s an amazing and awesome organization. While the overall experience is overwhelmingly positive, Jan acknowledges that the most bittersweet moments come when a client no longer requires meal delivery due to various reasons - improved health, a change in living situations, or sadly, sometimes when they pass. Despite these challenges, Jan’s devotion and understanding shine through as she continues to make a difference.

favorite aspects of volunteering

For Jan, the most cherished part of her volunteer experience at MOWLB is the opportunity to connect with the wonderful individuals to whom she delivers meals. She’s equally enthusiastic about the support she receives from MOWLB’s managers and staff. The camaraderie among fellow volunteers is another highlight, as Jan shares that the interactions with other drivers, deliverers, and volunteers while waiting for her meal coolers to be filled are filled with warmth and kindness.

Jan’s enthusiasm for MOWLB is infectious, and she wholeheartedly encourages others to get involved. To those considering volunteering or donating to MOWLB, she offers a resounding “DO IT!!” Jan conveys, with conviction, that Meals on Wheels is a fantastic and incredibly worthwhile organization that changes all lives for the better.

behind the scenes

Beyond her volunteer work, Jan leads a vibrant life. She has been a fitness instructor for an impressive 38 years, continuing to teach seven classes per week, including aqua-aerobics and a combined tai-chi/pilates/yoga class. When not inspiring others through fitness, she enjoys spending time with her church friends and family. Jan cherishes her connection with her three grown children and seven grandchildren, who unfortunately live out of state. Reading, journaling, and traveling with her husband ar other joys that fill Jan’s life.

Jan Schlotzhauer’s dedication to MOWLB exemplifies the spirit of compassion, community, and service that defines our organization. Through her unwavering commitment to making a positive impact and spreading joy, Jan inspires us all to come together and make a difference in the lives of those in need.

If you are feeling inspired by Jan’s story, we encourage you to join our volunteer community or consider making a donation to Meals on Wheels of Loveland and Berthoud. Together, we can continue to bring nourishment, connection, and care to the older adults in our community who rely on our support!
