Blizzard Boxes: Preparing for Winter Weather
Winter weather can be unpredictable, especially here in Northern Colorado. At Meals on Wheels of Loveland and Berthoud (MOWLB), we want to make sure our clients have access to food even when snow and ice make it unsafe for our staff and volunteers to be on the roads.
That’s why our Blizzard Boxes are arriving soon!
Each year, MOWLB provides Blizzard Boxes to our clients. These five-day meal boxes contain shelf-stable, ready-to-eat foods that can keep on hand in case MOWLB needs to unexpectedly close because of severe winter weather.
Why Do We Provide Blizzard Boxes?
For many of our homebound clients, their MOWLB delivery is an important source of nutrition, food security, and connection. When winter weather prevents us from making deliveries, we want our clients to have a backup food supply available at home.
Blizzard Boxes are distributed annually before winter weather arrives. Having these meals on hand provides peace of mind and helps ensure that an unexpected closure does not leave clients without access to food.
How Do We Decide When to Close?
Safety is always our top priority. MOWLB follows the Thompson School District snow day schedule when determining if weather conditions require us to close or suspend meal deliveries.
If Thompson School District closes due to inclement weather, MOWLB will also close and meal deliveries will not be made that day. Clients can use the food from their Blizzard Box until regular meal delivery resumes.
We encourage clients and their families to keep their Blizzard Box items in an accessible location and save them for an unexpected closure.
A Little Extra Peace of Mind
Winter weather can create significant challenges for our clients. Many are homebound, live alone, or have limited mobility, making it difficult or impossible to safely get to the grocery store when roads are icy or conditions are hazardous.
The Blizzard Box program is one more way MOWLB supports the health, safety, and independence of the people we serve. It is a simple resource that can make a big difference when an unexpected snow day arrives.
Thank you to our volunteers, staff, donors, and community partners who make programs like this possible. Together, we can help ensure that our neighbors are prepared, nourished, and supported all winter long.
Stay safe, stay warm, and keep an eye on the weather!
