NVW 2026: Reflecting on a Week of Gratitude

National Volunteer Appreciation Week may have officially wrapped up last week, but the spirit of service it celebrates remains the driving force of Meals on Wheels of Loveland & Berthoud (MOWLB) every day of the year.

As we look back on a week filled with treats, swag, recognition, and shared stories in our lobby, we are reminded that our mission is only possible because of the incredible people who show up for our community. In 2025, to meet the growing demand for service, that dedication was more evident than ever: 371 volunteers gave a staggering 23,920 hours of service. While these numbers tell a story of notable growth, the true heart of our success is found in the specific, vital work performed by each person. As we charge ahead with another year of service, we want to pause and recap the diverse roles - both seen and behind-the-scenes - that kept our engine running last week and throughout the year.

The Foundation of Our Daily Service

Every successful morning at MOWLB begins with our onsite teams. We spent last week celebrating our 25 Kitchen Assistants, who work in daily teams of 4 to prep and package every meal. We also highlighted our wonderful partnership with the Thompson School District’s Community Connections program; our student volunteers did a fantastic job this semester managing the cleaning of delivery coolers and peeling of carrots.

In the office, our 5 Office Assistants (one for each day of the week) provided the knowledgeable, steady presence needed to keep our programs running. From answering phones to vital clerical support, they ensure the "business" of kindness is handled with expertise and care.

Going the Extra Mile (Literally)

Our 180 active Delivery Drivers and subs are truly the "face" of our organization. Annually, these volunteers will use their own vehicles to drive over 90,000 miles - collectively traveling nearly four times around the globe!

However, the true impact of those miles is found in the connection at the doorstep. Beyond the nutrition, our drivers provide vital wellness checks and the friendly visits that help our homebound neighbors remain safe, independent, and seen.

Expanding the Circle of Care

We were also proud to spotlight the volunteers who help us serve the "whole person." Our Friends on Wheels program saw impressive growth last year, with 18 volunteer-client matches providing 484 hours of companionship and conversation to those facing isolation.

Our mission was further strengthened by specialized groups like the Mail Brigade (through Volunteers of America), whose help with large-scale mailing efforts saved our staff countless hours, and our Pet Food Delivery Volunteers. Through a partnership with the Colorado Pet Pantry, these volunteers ensure that our clients’ furry companions are fed and cared for, too.

Leadership from the Boardroom to the Route

Finally, we honored our Board of Directors. These volunteers contribute over 100 hours of meeting and leadership time annually to guide the future of MOWLB. What makes our Board unique is their hands-on heart for the work - nearly half of our board members also serve as active meal delivery drivers, leading by example on the very streets we serve.

A Continuing Celebration

It was a joy to see so many of you stop by last week to visit our “Appreciation Station” and enjoy some morning refreshments. While the swag and treats were a small token of our thanks, the real reward is the community we build together.

To our volunteers: You are the heart of this mission. Whether you work behind the scenes, in the office, or at the front door, you make our community a warmer, kinder place. Thank you for your commitment and dedication!
