Powered by Volunteers - Meet Bob Doolittle

Bob Doolittle is a long-time Meals on Wheels Volunteer Driver

In addition to being a wonderful volunteer for Meals on Wheels of Loveland and Berthoud for nearly 17 years, Bob Doolittle works part time and is involved in many local projects serving those experiencing homelessness. He also plays the keyboard and writes many of his own songs.

Here is what Bob has to say about his experience with Meals on Wheels —

tell how you first got involved with meals on wheels

My wife and I moved to Loveland in 2005, and in 2006, I noticed in the Reporter-Herald that Meals on Wheels of Loveland and Berthoud was looking for volunteers. I had volunteered as a driver for Meals on Wheels through the company I was working for in Colorado Springs, so [i] was anxious to continue that again.

what was your first impression of meals on wheels

As soon as I walked into the doors of Meals on Wheels of Loveland and Berthoud, I was impressed with the energy and compassion of everyone I met. I was greeted by other volunteer drivers who totally made me feel at home. Also, I love downtown Loveland, and my route was going to be in that area. Meals on Wheels had a family atmosphere right off the bat.

what do you find most challenging about our cause and mission?

For me, it would be making sure we have enough budget through donations, events, and volunteers to keep our clients fed. I believe the current staff is second-to-none in their marketing and promotions to our Loveland and Berthoud communities. It is always a great idea to make our volunteers feel appreciated which Meals on Wheels of Loveland and Berthoud does on a regular basis. Great job!

what is your favorite part about volunteering with us?

Certainly seeing the faces of our clients when we show up at the door is absolutely my favorite. I get so much more from them in those moments than I could ever give.

Bob was a guest speaker at this year’s Meals on 4th Event

I had one client that needed minor help around the house. She never asked me to help her with anything, but would leave batteries, light bulbs, eyeglass repair kits, etc., on the counter knowing that I would notice them and ask her if she needed help. I loved her so much!

Delivering meals is certainly very fulfilling, but I totally enjoy our morning conversations around the [lobby] table with other drivers. We just have a ball, and the love for each other and the camaraderie is second to none. We have solved many of the world's problems! Ha!

What would you tell someone who is thinking about getting involved with Meals on Wheels?

If you want to be a part of something heart-warming, spiritual, fulfilling, and satisfying, Meals on Wheels of Loveland and Berthoud has it all. You feel it when you work with other volunteers, you feel it from the support staff, and you feel it in your soul. It is quite refreshing and invigorating to know you are such an important part of other people’s lives.
