Volunteer Spotlight: Sherry Whitaker

We have often found that volunteering for Meals on Wheels runs in the family. That is the case for this month’s Volunteer Spotlight - Sherry Whitaker. Both Sherry’s Mother and Sister volunteered by delivering for Meals on Wheels in different Colorado locations, so when Sherry moved to the Loveland-Berthoud area, it was an easy decision to volunteer her time with the organization, too! Read on to learn more about Sherry’s dedication to the mission and work of Meals on Wheels of Loveland and Berthoud!

How long have you been a MOW volunteer?

3 years.

Sherry Whitaker has been a dedicated volunteer for 3 years.

Tell how you first got involved with Meals on Wheels of Loveland and Berthoud.

I had recently moved to the area and was looking for a volunteer opportunity. My mom and my sister both delivered for Meals on Wheels in different parts of the state, and they both loved the organization, so I thought I might as well. I was right!

What was your first impression of MOWLB?

My first impression of MOWLB was that the place was filled with caring and amazing people. From the staff in the office and the kitchen to the fellow drivers, it was evident that the Loveland/Berthoud Meals on Wheels was a special place. It is very well-run, and I always receive feedback from the clients that the food is delicious.

What do you find most challenging about our cause and mission at MOWLB?

I can’t imagine how difficult it must be to find reliable volunteers to drive as many routes as are needed in the Loveland and Berthoud area. Getting hot meals to clients on a daily basis must be a constant challenge. I am always amazed at how the staff (in particular, Jarita, but really ALL of the staff) balances this stressful job while showing great appreciation for the drivers.

What is your favorite part about volunteering at MOWLB?

My favorite part about volunteering at MOWLB is seeing the clients, getting to know them better, and bringing them a little joy through a hot meal and a smile; although I’m pretty sure they bring more joy and smiles to me than I do to them!

What would you tell someone who is thinking about volunteering or donating to MOWLB?

I would encourage someone who is considering volunteering or donating to do it! It is an exceptional organization. Your time and money will not be wasted!

What might someone be surprised to know about you?

I am a living kidney donor. I was blessed to have been able to donate my kidney to my mom in 2014.

There are many volunteer opportunities at Meals on Wheels of Loveland and Berthoud.

What do you do when you aren’t working/volunteering at MOWLB?

I work as a bookkeeper and enjoy being a wife to my husband, Kyle, and a mom to my 3 college-age sons (Jake, Jared, and Nate). They all go to schools in different states, so I like traveling to see them ( and watching one of them play baseball). I also enjoy hiking, gardening, and my Bible Study group.

Meals on Wheels of Loveland and Berthoud is grateful for the dedication and thoughtfulness that Sherry brings to her volunteer position. We love having enthusiastic drivers like Sherry!
