Celebrating Older Americans Act Nutrition Program: A Cornerstone for Meals on Wheels

March is a special month for Meals on Wheels of Loveland and Berthoud. Not only is it the advent of spring but it is also the traditional time when we spotlight a key supporter of the Meals on Wheels mission - the Older Americans Act Nutrition Program. This important piece of legislation sits as a cornerstone for what we do, providing essential funding that helps to serve nutritious meals for aging and homebound adults in our community. It works to combat both hunger and isolation.

The Older Americans Act Nutrition Program is more than just meals. It focuses on nurturing the well-being of older adults and ensures that everyone has access to balanced nutrition, as well as the special connections that a home meal delivery brings. Every day at Meals on Wheels, we witness how this support transforms lives, offering more than just nutrition, but a lifeline of care and community.

In March, we (Meals on Wheels America and other Meals on Wheels programs) rally around this vital program. In years past, we have done this under the “March for Meals” campaign. This year, we will be following a month-long initiative entitled #savelunch. This campaign shines a light on the importance of nutrition for older adults. It also serves as a call to action that urges our communities and elected officials to recognize and protect the funding that allows more homebound and aging adults to be reached each day.

This year, we are adding to the celebrations by once again hosting our MOWLB Volunteer Grand Prix peer-to-peer fundraising event. This event is a fun and engaging way for volunteers to connect, compete, and celebrate the spirit of giving back. Our volunteers are our best brand ambassadors, making this fundraiser a great way to not only raise funds for Meals on Wheels but also awareness for the mission.

As we move through this month of celebration, we want to make sure that our message and reasons are clear:

  • Every meal is a step towards health.

  • Every knock brings more connection and community.

The Older Americans Act Nutrition Program is important, and we are committed to advocating for its continued and expanded support. The need is growing and we must meet it. Join us in celebrating this crucial program and help spread the word with #savelunch messages.

Together, we can ensure that older adults in our community - and nation - are never forgotten.
