Celebrating Our Journey: Transforming Meals into Meaningful Moments

This month, Meals on Wheels of Loveland and Berthoud celebrates 56 years of service! As we reflect on our past, we are reminded of the profound impact a simple meal can have - transforming the lives of so many, and the many milestones we’ve achieved through the support of a dedicated community.

A Visionary Beginning

Our story began in January of 1968 when Meals on Wheels of Loveland and Berthoud became the first home-delivery meal service program west of the Mississippi River. Inspired by the need for good nutrition and socialization for the homebound, local Red Cross volunteer Dorothy Morin, philanthropist Helen Erion, and others laid the foundation of what we are today.

From Humble Beginnings to Community Pillar

On our first day, 12 meals were prepared and delivered from the local Elks Club kitchen. Fast forward to the present, we now operate from our own site in downtown Loveland with a commercial-grade kitchen, preparing over 86,000 meals annually (in 2023, we prepared and delivered 86,295 meals) for homebound clients. We also prepared thousands more meals for the Community Kitchen, serving homeless and low-income community members.

Celebrating Milestones

Last year, we celebrated our 55th Anniversary, a testament to our enduring commitment to the community. Each year marks not just an increase in the number of meals served but also in the number of lives touched and relationships built.

The Heart of Our Mission

Our mission, from 12 meals to 86,000 meals, has always been to nourish and enrich the lives of the aging and homebound in our community. It’s not just about the food - it’s about the daily contact and the caring connections that our volunteers provide. They are transforming a simple meal into meaningful moments each day, bringing warmth and companionship to those we serve.

Touching Lives - One Meal At A Time

Throughout our history, we have heard countless stories from clients and their families about the difference Meals on Wheels has made. From providing a sense of independence to breaking isolation barriers, each story is a reminder of the importance of this service.

Looking Ahead

As we continue to serve the community, we are driven by the same passion and dedication that started over half a century ago. We are dedicated to continuing this journey of love and care, through our meals and volunteers.

Join us as we continue to write new chapters in this beautiful story of community service and care. Together, we can transform meals into meaningful moments, and ensure that no older adult is left hungry or alone.
