The Kids of Summer

Summer at Meals on Wheels always brings a lively spark to our daily routine. When school lets out, our delivery routes take on a vibrant new energy as dedicated volunteers bring along their kids, grandkids, nieces, nephews, and young family friends. Equipped with their very own official name badges and boundless summer spirit, these young helpers bring an infectious joy to every doorstep they visit.

While our clients always look forward to seeing their regular meal delivery volunteers, there is a distinct magic in the intergenerational connections forged during these summer months.

This summer, over 50 youth stepped up to make a difference! Their impact reached far beyond delivery routes; young volunteers also pitched in behind the scenes, helping package hot meals, prep delivery bags, and keep our facilities clean and running smoothly.

These visits leave a lasting mark on clients and kids alike. As one volunteer shared about her kids when they accompanied her:

"Each time they remember something different, from a man who always had a new difficult puzzle going, to a sweet couple, or woman who would give them candy."

Beyond the shared smiles and sweet treats, these moments plant seeds of compassion in young hearts - teaching empathy, the joy of giving back, and what it truly means to care for your neighbor. They aren't just learning about community; they are actively building it.
